The Disappearing Act

‘Lucid Stead’ is the latest installation by US artist Phillip K Smith III. Taking the natural object of a homestead cabin in the Californian Joshua Tree desert, he brings it to life beyond its normal constrictions.

Adding mirrors to the cabin’s wooden walls, Lucid Stead reflects and refracts the surrounding terrain. In daytime, the piece seamlessly blends into the desert with a surreal presence. As the sun sets, the mirrored windows are illuminated by multicoloured LED panels, giving an alienated appearance.
